Curriculum

What we cover

From counting and number sense in kindergarten all the way through pre-algebra and geometry in 8th grade — every session is targeted to where your child actually is, not just what grade they're in.

Number Sense & Place Value
Building the intuitive understanding of how numbers work — ones, tens, hundreds, and beyond. Essential foundation for all math that follows.
Fractions & Decimals
One of the most common sticking points for elementary students. We build visual understanding first, then move to operations — adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing.
Multiplication & Division
Beyond memorizing times tables — understanding the relationship between numbers, long division strategies, and multi-digit problem solving with confidence.
Pre-Algebra Foundations
Variables, equations, order of operations, and algebraic thinking. Building the bridge between elementary arithmetic and the algebra students face in middle school.
Geometry & Measurement
Shapes, area, perimeter, angles, coordinate planes, and volume. Making geometry concrete and visual so students can see the logic behind every formula.
Word Problems
Teaching students to read, dissect, and set up word problems systematically — turning confusing paragraphs into clear math solutions, every time.
Data & Graphing
Reading charts, interpreting graphs, basic statistics, and probability. Skills increasingly tested on standardized assessments from 3rd grade onward.
Test Prep & Standardized Math
Targeted preparation for state math assessments, EOG/EOY tests, and placement exams. Strategies for timed tests and eliminating careless errors.

Who We Serve

Who this is for

Every child comes to us for a different reason. Here's who we work with most — and how we meet each student exactly where they are.

Struggling Students
Falling Behind in Class
If your child comes home with failing grades, dreads math time, or shuts down when homework begins — that's usually a sign of a foundational gap, not a lack of ability. We find the exact gap and fill it. Most students see measurable improvement within 4–6 sessions.
Grade-Level Support
Keeping Up, but Not Thriving
B and C students who "get by" but never quite feel confident in math. They pass the tests but the understanding isn't solid. We turn shaky competence into genuine mastery — so the next unit doesn't feel like starting over from scratch.
Advanced Enrichment
Ready for the Next Level
Strong math students who are bored in class or want to accelerate ahead. We extend their thinking with challenging problems, competition math foundations, and early exposure to algebra and geometry concepts — keeping their love of math alive and growing.
The Process

How it works

Three simple steps from your first message to your child's first breakthrough.

01
Step One
Free Consultation
We start with a no-pressure 20-minute call. You share what's happening — the frustrations, the specific topics, the patterns you've noticed. We listen and ask the right questions to understand your child's full picture.
02
Step Two
Personalized Learning Plan
Before the first session, we assess exactly where your child's understanding breaks down. We build a targeted plan — specific topics, session frequency, and measurable goals — so every minute of tutoring is purposeful.
03
Step Three
Weekly 1-on-1 Sessions
Live online sessions, one student and one tutor. No distracted classroom, no one-size-fits-all pace. We adjust in real time to what's clicking and what needs more work — and send a short parent update after every session.

Parent Reviews

What parents say

"My 4th grader went from crying at homework time to actually asking to practice math. The tutor found exactly where the fractions confusion started and rebuilt from there. In six weeks, she went from a D to a B+."

Jennifer M.
Parent of a 4th grade student

"We tried two other tutors before Learner's Retreat. The difference is the patience and the explanations — my son finally understands why math works the way it does, not just what steps to follow. Word problems don't scare him anymore."

David K.
Parent of a 6th grade student

"The weekly parent updates after each session are something I didn't know I needed. I actually know what my daughter is working on and what's improving. The communication is as good as the teaching."

Priya S.
Parent of a 3rd grade student

FAQ

Common questions

Everything parents ask before booking their first consultation.

How do I know if my child needs a math tutor?
The clearest signs are consistent frustration with homework, grade drops across more than one unit, avoidance behavior around math, or a child who can do the work in class but freezes on tests. If your child has started saying "I'm just not a math person," that's worth addressing immediately — that belief forms early and hardens fast. A free consultation helps us determine whether tutoring is the right fit, and what kind of support would help most.
What grade levels do you tutor in math?
We work with students from Kindergarten through 8th grade across all math levels — from early number sense and counting in K-2, through fractions and multiplication in grades 3-5, into pre-algebra and geometry in grades 6-8. We also support students who are working below grade level and need to backfill foundational gaps before they can keep pace with their class.
How long until my child sees improvement?
Most families report noticeable attitude improvement — less resistance, more willingness to try — within the first 2-3 sessions. Grade improvements typically show up within 4-8 sessions depending on how many foundational gaps exist. We track progress after every session and share updates with you, so there's never a mystery about how things are going.
Do you follow my child's school curriculum?
Yes. We align with your child's current classroom curriculum and can work directly from their textbooks, class notes, or upcoming test topics. We'll ask for curriculum details during the free consultation so we can immediately begin supporting what's being taught in school — while also filling in any underlying gaps that are making the current material harder than it should be.
